Someone I know asked about songs that make you happy after you sing them and I remembered when i decided that I was actually going to use the DO tickets.

Feeling very disassociated walking thru SOHO I walked into the Apple store to check out a few itms. My head was in that wired state where you know somewhere below your already racing thoughts there is a storm of conflict, your body ridged and relaxed.

I browse the ipod section in the corner in the back of the first floor and put a head set on one of the Nanos on my head and hit the play button not looking at the screen and those opening chords of Lou Reeds waft into my ears the bass rift mellow Da Do da do.

Holly came from Miami, F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the USA
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side
Hey honey
Take a walk on the wild side

And I remembered why I used to be special, watching the underage hookers on broom street as I sat in the back seat on sunday drives to the relatives in brooklyn

Standing at midnight on the pitched roof of the corner of spring and green at 1:00am firing a water hose high in the air so hipsters walking by on the corner would be framed in a rain storm all there, own falling from the darkness above like magic on a hot summer night.

Biking on my 10 speed under the deserted west side highway watching the young men hang out and wander in and out of the deserted crumbling Docks.

50's subway cars scream thru the tunnels only some just getting air conditioning the old ceiling fans fans still pumping hot summer air and wicker seats

Standing in front of the original Film Forum looking up at the shaded windows of the Loft and wondering if i could walk in.

Candy came from out on the Island
In the backroom she was everybody's darlin'
But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head
She says, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side
I Said, Hey baby
Take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls go
doo do doo do doo do do doo..

Having my first sex on bleeker street hanging in my friends apartment at 12 years old sucking cock and fucking ass in an all boy orgy of mutual masturbation and experimentation.

wandering the galleries west broadway on a saturday morning OK harris big paintings when it was below spring street.

Walking into the pussycat porn palace at 14 and finding a wonderland of booths and every fantasy a drop of a quarter with the live booth for a few quarters more.
Leaving my DNA there on the floor cause I could

Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there
New York City's the place where they say,
Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said, Hey Joe
Take a walk on the wild side

Friends scoring in washington park the fountain shooting high in the air the musicians playing all the old songs under the shady nooks nearby same as they do today but then they had dark hair and were young.

Walking to PS 3 every-morning just down the block from the oldest gay porn store and knowing it

Pressing my nose against the front window of the leatherman as i walked home from school

Spring street at 6am walking the dog and being the only person in soho at that hour walking towards Broadway

Sugar Plum Fairy came and hit the streets
Lookin' for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the Apollo
You should've seen em go go go
They said, Hey shuga Take a walk on the wild side
I Said, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side
All right, huh

Nightowl head shop on 4th playing pinball games and up till 4am on the video games in times square hustling games for fun

The hookers on 28th street parading slow in the summer heat, nothing but stocking and bras only street legal when the rain coats close when the gumballs flash.

Walking in the first New york Halloween parade 20 kids and a big dragons head on 2 wheels and ending shortly under the Washington square arch

Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was James Dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that bash
Said, Hey babe,
Take a walk on the wild side
I said, Hey honey,
Take a walk on the wild side
and the coloured girls say,
doo do doo do doo do do doo

and the horn plays that New york rift and fades away I take off the head set and wander out of the spring street post office and for a moment Dean and Deluca is still on prince between greene and wooster and Food is serving egg salad sandwiches on the corner and I can see bales of SoHo News papers to deliver.

The guys who ran the numbers joint in the narrow candy store on spring are still making eggcreams the right way for the kids even tho there was dust an inch thick on the candy in the front window.
8th street is nothing but book stores and shoe shops E.S. wilentz is still there.
I am bikeing on the empty elevated west side highway up to 34th street and feel the city around me

for a moment

and my head is calm and im happy and the day is cold but the air smells of hot 70’s summer and I walk away calm and still.

Thank you Lou Reed

Oh man, that's beautiful. I grew up on the other side of the Atlantic but the music still resonates strongly with me, I imagine we're of the same sort of age (I'm 42).

In recent years I've had the opportunity at long last to spend some time in NY and walking the length and breadth of Manhattan island has been one of the most fun things I've done in ages. From shady tree lined streets of Tribeca to the hustle and bustle of Times Square, from the peacefulness and greenery of Central Park to sitting with my feet in the fountain of Washington park listening to jazz, from a gallery showing in someone's apartment in Greenwhich, to picking up bagels and lox at 3am coming home. I even saw Blade Runner at the Ziegfeld cinema. NY lived up to everything I imagined and so much more. I never expected to like the city but I fell in love with it. I gotta go back again sometime soon.

wow. thank you so much for writing and posting that. I'm absolutely moved & full of giddy longing reading it. Wow. Maybe the best thing I can say is that that was as beautiful as the song that inspired it, which you know is saying something big.

This is a beautiful post. You must talk to Selina when you two are together.

When I lived on Sullivan Street, sometimes I walk to the little bakery next to Porto Rico. It was a sliver of a store. I used to get the mortadella on a semolina roll. Long gone.
