There are times

when its better to say nothing and to not engage. To have a conversation people have to be aware of what's gone before and how their responses and actions shape the present dialogue or lack thereof.

If simple conversational openers like hello and how are you? and what are you doing? are best left unanswered then what does that say about how the information garnered by these simple interactions will be used to start fires and land mines later.
